Woman shot dead after protesters identify themselves with U.S. Capitol troops

A woman shot dead after pro-Trump protesters charged the U.S. Capitol building on Wednesday has been identified as the 14-year-old veteran of the Air Force, Ashli ​​Babbit, of San Diego.

DC Police Chief Robert Contee on Wednesday confirmed that Babbit had been shot by a police officer in the Capitol. An internal investigation is now underway.

FOX 5’s Lindsay Watts spoke to Babbit’s mother-in-law on Wednesday night.

“I really do not know why she decided to do that,” Babbit’s mother-in-law told Watts.

Babbit and her husband owned a business in San Diego. Her husband did not come to DC, Watts reported.

The shooting was reported shortly after 3 p.m., as the situation inside and outside the Capitol building escalated as Congress began counting the votes of the Electoral College.

Babbit was later pronounced dead after being transported to a local hospital in critical condition.
