Woman in custody after teenager, elderly man injured in shooting in Fort Lauderdale

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. Fort Lauderdale police say a 32-year-old woman is in custody after a shooting that took place Tuesday morning in which a teenage boy and an elderly man were injured.

The suspect has been identified as Gwendlyn Whitfield-Dorsey, of Fort Lauderdale, and she will face two charges of attempted murder for the first time, police said.

Detectives say they believe it was a domestic incident, although they are still investigating and did not disclose her relationship with the two injured.

Sgt. DeAnna Greenlaw said in an email to Local 10 News that officers responded to the shooting in the 2900 block of the Southwest 13th Court just before 8:30 p.m. While at the scene, they heard gunshots in the immediate area and ran to investigate.

According to Greenlaw, officers found an armed woman in the front yard of a house and ordered her to drop the gun she was holding.

‘Officers later determined that the woman was responsible for disarming the suspect during the altercation. The suspect, another adult woman, was identified and arrested without further incident, ‘FLPD said in a news release.

Greenlaw confirmed that a teenage boy and an older man were injured during the shooting and taken to Broward Health Medical Center.

According to her, the teenager was in a critical but stable condition, while the elderly man did not sustain life-threatening injuries.

“Detectives in the area will compile the details of what exactly happened before the arrival of our officers,” Greenlaw said.

The identity of the victims has not yet been revealed.

‘It’s unusual in this area. Very quiet area, ”said Joe Smariga, who lives in the area.

A motive for the shooting is currently still unclear.

“We are just grateful that we can end it quickly without hurting anyone else,” said interim assistant principal Frank Sousa.
