Woman dies after receiving COVID-19 vaccine from Cal Poly Pomona; no link to shot suspected

POMONA, California (KABC) – A 78-year-old woman has died after receiving the Pfizer vaccine from Cal Poly Pomona, but according to her officials, her death is not related to the shot.

The woman received the shot Friday afternoon and was spotted when she began complaining of discomfort and lost consciousness, according to a statement from Dr. Michael E. Morris, medical director of Kaiser Permanente’s COVID-19 vaccination program in Southern California, who runs the site.

Paramedics at the scene assisted the woman “but she was ultimately unable to recover.”

“Her cause of death has not been determined. However, there were no signs or symptoms of a severe allergic or anaphylactic reaction,” Morris said in the statement.

The woman’s family says she had a history of heart-related illnesses. Her 57-year-old husband also received the vaccine and is still urging people to get the vaccine, adding that he plans to get his second dose within a few weeks.

Kaiser says the site will remain open and vaccinations will continue as long as supplies are available.

“On behalf of all those involved in the vaccine, led by Kaiser Permanente, we express her sincere and heartfelt condolences to her family,” Morris said.
