Woman dies after being thrown from an SUV in an accident in Salt Lake City

SALT CITY – According to Utah Highway Patrol officials, a woman died after being thrown from an SUV when it rolled onto I-15 on Wednesday.

According to Nick Street, Utah Highway Patrol, the driver of the Mercedes SUV merged from the far left lane on I-15 and attempted to exit onto the I-80 westbound lane. The driver lost control of the SUV and he rolled twice and came to a stop on the 500-south ramp to the westbound I-180.

The driver was thrown through the sunroof by the force of the roll and came about 30 feet from the driveway. The other occupants of the vehicle, a male passenger and two children, did not appear to be in critical condition but were transported to the hospital, Street said.

The accident was initially thought to be fatal, but the driver showed ‘signs of life’ and is reportedly in critical condition. Street said the woman was transported to the hospital but then succumbed to her injuries.

According to the Utah Department of Transportation, the driveway from northern I-15 to western I-80 is currently closed, but is expected to be open at about 6:45 p.m.

Further information, including the identities of those involved, was not disclosed.
