With the new ‘green room’ of Google Meet you can do a pre-check for audio / video

It can be difficult to figure out how to meet in a video conference, especially if you want to make sure everything works before you start the meeting. How is your lighting? Are you sitting too close or too far from the camera? Is your sound good, were you accidentally muffled or do you sound like an echo chamber?

Google has now made it easier for you to control your appearance and your technology previously A measurement conference with its new “green room” function (via 9to5Google). When you start or prepare to join a meeting, in the usual “Ready to join?” window that appears for the first time, you now also see a small button below your video that says, “Check your audio and video.” Click on the button and a pop-up window will not only show your video image, but you can also see (and change) which microphone, speaker and camera are currently available.

With the “Next” button in the pop-up window, you can then record a short 6-second video preview so you can see what you will look and sound like to others in your meeting. According to Google, the clip is private to you and will not be stored. Your microphone, speaker, camera and connection are also checked by the system and get green ticks if they seem to be working.

Previously, you could see how you appeared in the initial ‘Ready to Join?’ window, the new “green room” from Meet could be even more useful. For example, you can test different types of lighting, test whether the sound of your laptop is better or worse than that of your headset, and make sure you look good before you start meeting – with colleagues, friends or family.
