The latest major update is shaking up the reconnaissance sim again by making you friendly and adopting wild alien creatures. Since the flora and fauna are procedurally generated, you can have extremely unusual pets.
If you are feeding an animal, an interaction menu will appear with options for milking, riding or adopting it. You can have up to six companions at the beginning, but you can unlock new slots. Companions have their own personalities and you can customize them with a new name, accessories and posters.
You need to earn the trust of beings over time. They sometimes need food and your attention, but they can do much more than just give you company. They can help you as you explore by searching for resources and buildings, digging up items, hunting and alerting dangers. Companions can even use items such as the torch and myelasers. You can call them or direct them with gestures. If you’re playing in virtual reality, you can point to a place to send your strange friend there.

Creatures can communicate with your exosuit through a neural link from their harness to give you an idea of their thoughts, desires and needs. You also have the option to ride giant creatures.
If you take good care of your companions, they will lay eggs. It can hatch to give you a brand new baby creature and you can swap eggs with other players. You can even use your inner self to produce unique creatures by changing the genetic material of eggs in an egg sequence on a space anomaly.
The update fixes some bugs and improves loading and throwing times on PlayStation 4. There is also a welcome update of the user interface. You can use analog sticks (or keyboard shortcuts if you play with a mouse and keyboard) to quickly select options in dialog menus and interactions.
This patch is mainly about the creatures, to improvements in movement animations and ‘particle effects that result from the mist.’ It is now available on all platforms.
