Wisconsin residents need ten digits to make local calls

MILWAUKEE (AP) – Wisconsin residents will need to dial ten digits to make local calls from this fall.

Currently, people in Wisconsin can dial a number in the same area without dialing the area. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that people must include the area code in all calls from October 23rd.

The change will affect both landlines and cell phones in all six of Wisconsin’s area codes, including 262, 414, 534, 608, 715 and 920.

Two dozen other countries that did not switch to 10-digit picks will also be affected.

The change comes as the Federal Communications Commission introduces 988 as the new, nationwide telephone number for suicide prevention and mental health assistance.
