‘Wipeout’ contestant dies of heart attack after taking part in show

A participant in the American TV show Obliteration a coroner died of a heart attack after completing the obstacle course of the program.

Michael Paredes (38) took part in the TBS show on 18 November 2020, but was taken to hospital after a medical emergency.

According to an autopsy report, Paredes, who died the day after the incident, suffered a heart attack due to unnoticed coronary artery disease, reports NBC News. A toxicological report was also compiled showing that the participant had no drugs or alcohol in his system at the time of his death.

Obliteration contestants are asked to complete four rounds from different hurdles, with the final winner of each season’s 24 contestants earning the title Wipeout Champion as well as $ 50,000 (£ 36.5k).

According to the report, Paredes completed two obstacle courses before falling on the third. After not being able to swim at the side of the water pool in which he was, he was pulled out and put in a wheelchair. He soon lost consciousness, recovered CPR and was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital in Santa Clarita, California.

Paredes, like all others Obliteration participants, underwent a medical examination before being allowed to take part in the show.

In a statement shared after the participant’s death, a TBS spokesman said: “We are devastated to hear of his passing and our deepest sympathy goes out to the family.”

Obliteration first aired on ABC in 2008 and aired until 2014. In 2020, it was reloaded by TBS with hosts John Cena, Nicole Byer and Camille Kostek.
