Winter wonderland creates dangerous road conditions for San Antonio drivers

SAN ANTONIO The Alamo city turned into a winter wonderland on Monday after snow and ice flooded overnight.

With snow so rare in our area, some may enjoy the frost. Others who had to drive vehicles with ice on roads were not so amused.

“I just moved here like I did two months ago,” said Gabriela Yambo, who moved from North Carolina. “I grew up in Connecticut, and we really get like the snow every week.”

Yambo thought she had finally escaped the snow. On Sunday night, however, the slippery road conditions intensified as 3.7 inches of snow fell, leaving many roads in San Antonio impassable.

Of the many wrecks, a crew member of a KSAT spotted a stacking vehicle on a driveway on US 90 near Highway 151 on the West Side, in which at least one semi-trailer was hampered.

The Texas Department of Transportation shut down local state roads Sunday night as a precaution.

“We currently have crew members trying to direct the highways in Bexar County,” said Laura Lopez, a TxDOT spokeswoman.

Lopez said about 40 trucks sprayed brine and chat rock on highways after plowing Monday.

This unusual winter storm had a greater impact than people expected.

“I assume it did not happen often, so hopefully it will not happen again,” Yambo said.

By noon, a lot of snow and ice in city streets had melted in muddy and even water, but with future road conditions still uncertain, TxDOT says it is not sure when all state roads will reopen.

The City of San Antonio has sent KSAT the following statement:

“Public works keep an eye on roads to the rare winter conditions and snow accumulation. Crew members assist SAPS by placing barriers on bridges and bridges maintained by the city to prevent drivers from crossing dangerous roads.

As the snow begins to melt, the Public Works teams will continue to disperse gravel material that helps with the trapping of vehicles. There are wrong traffic signals malfunctioning due to the power outages, and we urge residents to drive, if possible.

Bexar County officials announced that provincial facilities would be closed, and court proceedings would be canceled Tuesday.
