On Thursday, roads in Iowa wreaked havoc and left dozens of people in Wisconsin stranded by ice currents, with a powerful winter storm showing no signs of abating in the Midwest.
The white conditions along Interstate 80 west of Newton, Iowa, resulted in 40 vehicles being piled up, the state patrol said Thursday afternoon.
Troops, who were not injured, “looked at vehicle after vehicle to examine occupants,” the state patrol said on its Facebook page. “There are some serious injuries and some minor injuries,” the report said.
On the photos posted by the state patrol, it was also shown that tractor trailers were turned or hacked on their side, along with other cars and trucks, including State Trooper cars.
In Door County, Wisconsin, U.S. Coast Guard personnel and local and government officials rescued 62 people from three separate ice levels, sheets of ice breaking off the frozen surface of the water, the Coast Guard said in a news release.
Rescue crews, airboats and helicopters were near the mouth of Sturgeon Bay after calls to report cracks in the ice between groups of people on the ice and on the shore, reports CNN subsidiary WLUK.
According to WLUK, 62 people were rescued early Thursday afternoon without any injuries.
According to Derek Van Dam, CNN meteorologist, Thursday was a “curtain raiser” for which the area is the coming days.
Snow, which is forecast until Friday, is expected to be followed by a freezing point or rapidly falling temperatures.
According to Van Dam, it can get so cold overnight on Saturday to Sunday that even car freezer can solidify.
