Failed to update to latest version

Microsoft’s major feature updates arrive twice a year, the most recent of which October 2020 update, which included the new Microsoft Edge browser on Chromium, and Start menu updates, taskbar, and notifications. When an update rolls out on your device, you should receive a notification. Or you can na Institutions > Update and security > Windows Update a click Check for updates. If available, you will see Feature update for Windows 10, version 20H2. Click on Download and install.

According to Microsoft, if you experience a problem or error update, you can try the following:

  • Make sure your device is connected to the internet (you need an internet connection to update it)
  • Try to install the update manually by following the instructions above.
  • Start the Windows Update troubleshooter: select Start > Institutions > Update and security > Troubleshooting. Under Get started, choose Windows Update.

If the troubleshooter does not resolve the issue, consult the Microsoft Guide for dealing with update issues.

Not enough storage space for updates

Windows 10 updates may require a good amount of space. This is what Microsoft suggests you do if you experience an error due to a lack of disk space.

  • Save files you do not need, on your external hard drive or thumb drive or in a cloud account such as Google Drive or OneDrive.
  • Consider enabling the Storage Sense feature, which will automatically free up space by deleting files you do not need, such as temporary files and trash, when you run out of disk space or at certain intervals. To enable Storage Sense, go to Start > Institutions > System > Storage, open the storage settings and turn on Storage Sense. Choose Set up, or run it now.
  • If your device does not have Storage Sense, you can use the Disk Cleanup tool to delete temporary files and system files. Type in the search box Taskbar disk cleaning, and select it from the results. Check the boxes next to the type of files you want to delete – By default, downloaded program files, temporary Internet files, and thumbnails are selected.

Uncontrollable browsing

Your device scrolls at the bottom of every menu and page, even if you do not move the mouse. There are a few different ways to solve this. First try to disconnect the mouse or turn off its Bluetooth connection and turn it on again.

You can also see if this is a problem with your browser. For example, in Chrome you can try to Preferences > Advanced > Accessibility, and switch on Navigate pages with the text pointer.

You may also need to update your mouse or touchpad driver. Go to Device Manager, and see if there are any warnings next to the names of your mice. If so, you can fix it there.

Another possible solution: Try to create a new local user. It often appears on message boards as a solution to a number of problems. You do not have to move all your items to a new account, but the act of creating a new user (or logging in to another local account that already exists), logging in to that account and then again log in to your account help. Check to create a new user Institutions > Bills > Family and other users. Click on Add someone else to this computerand click on the link “I do not have this person’s login information”. Click on Add user without a Microsoft account, and enter a new username.

Files are opened in different programs

If you are starting to open Windows 10 files in different programs, there are some solutions to try.

Microsoft

Sometimes when you update Windows 10, you can return programs and files to their default settings or switch settings. One way to change this is to Start > Institutions > Programs > Default programs. Choose which default you want to set and then select the app.

If you are going to open a file, you can also right-click it to see your options. You can choose Open with and then Choose another application, and find which one you want. You will see an option asking if you always want to use the app when opening such files.

Use three monitors

After upgrading to Windows 7 or 8, many users have reported that they can no longer connect three monitors to Windows 10. A user on CNET forums recommends the solution: plug in all monitors and go to Control panel > Show > Change the screen settings. You need to display all three screens there. If one axis is disconnected (the screen is darker than the other), click on the screen and select Extend the desktop to this screen. (You may need to restart your machine as soon as you plug in all three monitors and then try again.)

Bluetooth does not work

If you suddenly can’t connect your Bluetooth headset, mouse or keyboard, there are a few things you can try:

Make sure Bluetooth is turned on. You can do this by going to the taskbar and selecting Action Center (it looks like a message square). If you do not see Bluetooth, select Expand. You should then see Bluetooth and be able to choose to turn it on. If your device is not paired with Bluetooth accessories, it will say Not paired. Your other option is to Start > Institutions > Devices > Bluetooth and turn it on there.

Check your Bluetooth device. Make sure your accessory is turned on, that it’s charged or that it has new batteries, and that it’s close to your Windows 10 device. You can then try to turn off the Bluetooth device and turn it on again after a few seconds. If it still does not work, make sure it is not too close to any other USB device that is in a USB 3.0 port, as it may interfere.

Check your Windows 10 device. Make sure Airplane Mode is off (Start > Institutions > Network and internet > Flight mode). Try turning Bluetooth on and off (see above). Finally, try removing the device and adding it again (Start > Institutions > Devices > Bluetooth and other devices. Select the device you are having trouble with, and select Remove device > Yes).

If none of this works, Microsoft has some other tips to fix Bluetooth issues.

Problems connecting the printer

Windows 10 supports most printers, but there are connection issues. To install or add a printer (whether network, wireless, or Bluetooth), go to Start > Institutions > Devices > Printers and scanners. Choose Add a printer or scanner. Your device must find the printer (assuming it is on and connected to Wi-Fi or the network) and you can select it Add device.

If your printer is not listed, select The printer I want is not listed, and then follow the instructions to add it manually using one of the options.

If you want to install a local printer, you can just plug it into your USB port and follow the same instructions. If your printer stops working, you can do the process again.

Too many notifications

Windows 10 can sometimes be a little notification heavy. If you notice that these pop-ups are interrupting your workflow, you can customize it by going to Start > Institutions > System > Notifications and actions. There you can decide which notifications you want on or off.

Cortana does not work

Is Microsoft’s virtual assistant Cortana not helping you? A lot of different things can go wrong. Start by turning it on and off, by going to Start > Cortana > Institutions. Then check your microphone Institutions > Sound – if you do not use the default computer, it may be disconnected.

You can also try restarting your device and see if there are any updates available to resolve the issue.
