Why Nick Sirianni believes Jalen Hurts can succeed any young quarterback in the Eagles attack

The Philadelphia Eagles hired Nick Sirianni to help the franchise in the post-Carson Wentz era, a time when the franchise would develop a young quarterback to lead the organization for years to come. Whether quarterback Jalen Hurts will be or a first-round pick in the 2021 NFL draft is unknown, but Sirianni is confident that any signal caller will succeed in the attacking system the coaching staff creates.

The Eagles have a young attacking coaching staff in place, starting with offensive coordinator Shane Steichen – who has already received rave reviews from Justin Herbert, the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. Sirianni saw the progress Herbert was making in 2020, and convinced him Steichen could do the same in Philadelphia.

“The way he plays and talks about the quarterback to make the game for the quarterback – he just has a unique way,” Sirianni said in a one-on-one interview with Eagles insider Dave Spadaro. “We saw with Herbert how he could take a young quarterback who has never had a turn in the NFL, and turn him into the rookie of the year. He has just as much passion, especially when he takes the position. As we all know, this is the most important position in all sports.

“Having his expertise in the field will be great for this football team.”

Sirianni not only hired Steichen, who coached him with the Los Angeles Chargers from 2013 to 2017, to help a young full-back. He was also able to coach Brian Johnson of the University of Florida as the new coach of the team, who has an impressive record with signal callers, despite having never coached in the NFL.

‘You saw what he did with the offense in Florida. Super impressive, ‘said Sirianni. “He brings so many great ideas. He brings an element of the university game we all have.”

Johnson has no connection to Sirianni, but Hurts. He has known the Eagles fullback since Hurts was four, and even tried to recruit Hurts when he was the coach in the Mississippi state.

Sirianni is confident that Steichen and Johnson can develop any young quarterback that the Eagles bring in, but that’s a strong sign for Hurts’ future if he is the unpredictable starter in 2021.
