James and Johnson are good friends and spend five years as colleagues together in Wake Forest. Both were part of the Demon Deacons’ recruiting class in 2010 and put together their first season on campus before playing the next four seasons together.
Since Johnson was the best cornerback of Wake Forest and James was one of the best receivers of the team, the two often went head to head in practice. In fact, ahead of the 2014 season, Wake Forest coach Dave Clawson said that during his practice, NFL scouts asked Johnson to take out James.
“They said ‘Coach, the game we want to see is (Johnson) versus (James),’ Clawson told the Winston Salem Journal in 2014. ‘ . ‘
