Why Bill Gates Uses Android Phones Over an iPhone

Bill Gates recently participated in an interview with Andrew Ross Sorkin at Clubhouse in which he discusses his new book, The Pandemic, and Technology.

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates recently took part in an interview in which he revealed that he uses an Android phone rather than an iPhone. The discussion took place on the audio app Clubhouse with journalist Andrew Ross Sorkin. It is described as an informal conversation and discusses topics, including Gates’ new book How to avoid a climate disaster, the COVID-19 pandemic and technology.

Gates is the latest in a series of high-profile tech names to appear on Clubhouse. Vladimir Tenev, co-founder of Elon Musk and Robinhood, talked about the GameStop share on the platform and Mark Zuckerberg discussed Facebook Reality Labs and work remotely. These appearances have, of course, helped to raise the profile of Clubhouse, which is not yet out of beta and so far only available on iOS.

Sorkin started things by referring to this reference and said when the interview was announced on Twitter, people asked “Bill Gates has an iPhone?” Gates explained that he has an Android phone for daily use, but also said that he regularly plays with iPhones to keep up to date with everything. To elaborate on why he prefers an Android phone for general use, he said: “Some of the Android manufacturers pre-install Microsoft software in a way that makes it easy for me and is smoother about how the software connects with the operating system, so that’s what I’m used to.

What else did Gates say at clubhouse?

At Clubhouse itself, Gates said he has recently become more familiar with the platform and that he has had some demonstrations of it. He revealed that he has an official account and an account on most social media platforms “rubbish,” but that he prefers to spend his time online reading the Economist and the New York Times. Gates insisted on using Google or Bing, describing himself as “a loyal, loyal, loyal Bing user,” and said he uses Google to compare how competitive it is. When Gates replied that he did not know anyone who used Bing, Gates joked: “You’re traveling with a very snobbish crowd!”

Asked which companies he says do the most exciting and futuristic things, Gates says Google and Microsoft. “Yes, Amazon is doing a good job, Apple is doing a good job, Facebook,” he explains. “But as far as the boundaries of computer science and architecture and AI really go, I would say Google and Microsoft have a strong R&D commitment – both the things they openly share and the things they focus their own products on.”

On the Apple car, he said: “I doubt they will make the same margin as they do on the iPhone,” also note that there is a question about how fast autonomous cars can catch on – and indeed whether it will be at all. Electric cars, he said, were already safe. As for his own car, Gates has revealed that he drives a Porsche Taycan. He insisted on why it was a Porsche rather than a Tesla, and he explained that his first car was a Porsche and that his Taycan “make a certain noise.” He did notice that he bought Teslas for family members and mentioned it “the company that did the most for electric cars.”

A few additional recommendations come in the form of Lupine, the Netflix show about the French lord burglar, and the Oura ring, which is a device to track sleep quality.
