Hideki Matsuyama made history at the 2021 Masters after becoming the first Japanese man to win a major golf tournament at Augusta National in Georgia.
Receiving the coveted green jacket of 2020 champion Dustin Johnson, Matsuyama offered a rare few words about his private life, namely wife Mei and daughter Kanna.
“I was thinking about it today,” Matsuyama said through his interpreter.
Matsuyama finished the April 2021 tournament with a total of 10 under par and defeated American runner-up Will Zalatoris. He later celebrated on the green with the kaddy Shota Hayafuji.
“I’m very happy that I played well for them,” Matsuyama said of his family.
In August 2017, Matsuyama shocked the media after he and his wife May were secretly married in January of that year. The couple also welcomed their daughter in July.
While Matsuyama talked about his surprising revelation, he said that no one in the past has expressed interest in his personal affairs.
‘Nobody really asked me if I was married, and I did not have to answer the question. “I felt it would be a good time after the PGA because our baby is being born and I thought it would be a good time to let everyone know,” Matsuyama told Golf.com at the time.
Matsuyama’s PGA Tour profile includes a wife May and daughter Kanna, in addition to his $ 33.2 million career earnings.
The gadget of the golfer at the Hero World Challenge in 2016 was a woman named Mei Inui – months before he announced the news of his marriage.
The athlete at the time praised his cadie for keeping him calm under pressure.
“When things get tough, I sometimes put my head down and I shut up,” Matsuyama told USA Today. “But May was always positive throughout, even behind the nine, and gave me good vibes, which really helped me get in.”
