Whitmer responds to criticism of trip to Florida: ‘I did not party in Miami’

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer said the attacks on her trip to Florida last month were “sad” when she visited her father.

“It’s sad,” Whitmer told The Washington Post Live. “It’s a two-day trip. I did not party in Miami.” She characterized the trip as a “check-in” at her father who has an illness. “It was definitely not a spring break.”

Michigan has faced the worst COVID-19 positivity rates in recent weeks, and Whitmer has blamed travelers during the spring break going to Florida. Whitmer encouraged people to return from the Sunshine States to work from home for a week or to teach their children at a distance for a week.

Tiffany Brown, a Whitmer spokeswoman, said the trip was not for taxpayers and the governor was not long gone, according to the report. She pointed out that the governor is regularly tested for the virus and that her father is vaccinated.

MICHIGAN GOV’S TOP HELP HOLIDAYS IN FLORIDA

“The governor did not go into the spring break, and she left the state in more than a month,” Brown said in a statement. “In the last six months, she has left the state three times, once for the inauguration, once to assist her elderly father who is struggling with chronic illness, and once to join the National Guard troops in Michigan. to visit. “

Republicans in the state wasted little time grabbing the report.

Ted Goodman, the state Republican’s communications director for the state, told FOX 2 Detroit that Whitmer’s ‘blatant revelation of hypocrisy is an insult to every Michigander affected by her lockout orders and travel warnings.’

“Not only did Whitmer and her top staff go on vacation to Florida, but they tried to keep it a secret, because for Whitmer, it’s ‘rules for you, but not for me,'” Goodman said.

Governor Tricia Foster posted photos of her vacation in Siesta Key earlier this month on Facebook.

“This is a biased attack by a white nationalist website,” spokesman Bobby Leddy said in a statement at the time. “Trish Foster has been fully recovered from COVID and fully vaccinated.”

Whitmer’s newly appointed health director traveled to Alabama earlier in April, shortly after the governor discouraged residents from traveling while Michigan led the country in new cases of coronavirus.

The director of Michigan’s Department of Health and Human Services, Elizabeth Hertel, was according to the Michigan Information & Research Service in Gulf Shores, Alabama. Gulf Shores is a popular destination along the Gulf of Mexico.

Whitmer told NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday that things could start to slow down in her condition. Health officials said on Friday that the average seven-day positivity rate had fallen to 17.1% in recent days, but that it had remained above a high of 14.4% in December.
