Who is now eligible for a vaccine? Who is eligible in March?

Currently, people over the age of 70, health workers, first responders, K-12 teachers and K-12 school staff are on the list of people who can get a vaccine.

From March 1, the list will be open to people 65 and older, and to anyone over the age of 18 with an existing state-approved medical condition. People who have had the most types of cancer in the past year are eligible. People who have been diagnosed with hematological cancer or blood cancer at any time in the past five years are eligible. Anyone with uncontrollable diabetes, classified as a1c levels of 9.0 or higher, is eligible for a shot. People who are considered obese based on a body mass index of 40 or higher are eligible. If you are receiving immunosuppression therapy or have a weakened immune system due to medication or HIV, you will be eligible for the vaccine.

Other suitable conditions include being a recipient of solid organ transplants, having severe kidney disease, chronic liver disease including hepatitis B or C, chronic heart disease including high blood pressure, chronic respiratory disease including asthma, neurological conditions affecting respiratory function Parkinson’s disease and Down syndrome , with a stroke or dementia and asplenia, including sickle cell disease.

How can I prove that I have a medical condition that qualifies me for a vaccine?

You do not have to. The state relies on the honor system and asks those without underlying conditions not to take vaccinations from those who have serious medical conditions.

“If you do not fall into the categories … do not look for a vaccine,” said the state epidemiologist, dr. Angela Dunn, said at a press briefing this week.

I qualify for a vaccine! That means I have to call my health department to make an appointment, right?

Wrong. March’s appointment slots are not open yet.

Public announcements will be made when it is time for people to sign up. The state is asking residents not to bother the local health departments while focusing on vaccinating people over 70. Everything according to the state slows down the distribution of vaccines to other groups.

Salt Lake County Health Department spokesman Nicholas Rupp said people could probably start planning March appointments about a week before the end of February. If the March schedule opens earlier, the public will be notified.

“They are not open now,” he said, “(residents) should not call us or try to make an appointment now.”

I do not qualify for a vaccine in March. When can I be vaccinated?

More people should be able to get the vaccine in April. The state plans to extend the admission to vaccines to more age groups, more existing conditions and for people living in communal areas such as prisons.

All Utahns should be able to get vaccinated this spring or summer according to current state plans.
