Which team won the Carson Wentz, Matthew Stafford trade?

On Thursday, all the drama surrounding Eagles full-back Carson Wentz finally came to an end. The Philadelphia Eagles and Indianapolis Colts have agreed on a deal that would give the Eagles a choice from the third round of 2021 and a second pick in the second round in 2022 as a first round as Wentz in 2021 75 percent of the snaps play (or 70 percent and the Colts pick up the playoffs) and send Wentz to the Colts.

For Wentz, it’s a chance to reload his career under Frank Reich, who was his attacking coordinator when he first entered the league. For the Eagles, this is not the deal Matthew was hoping for, but it’s not bad for a quarterback who played so poorly that he was considered a backup by the end of the year.

Clearly, this trade was not flashy and excited about the Detroit Lions / Los Angeles Rams quarterback bite, but it does add to an already unconventional off-season.

Today’s question of the day is therefore:

Which of the four teams in the two quarterback deals got the best price?

My answer: Let’s first look at what each team lost and lost:

Philadelphia Eagles

Acquired:

  • Choice of the third round in 2021
  • Second round of 2022 (could be a first round)
  • $ 816,928 in hood (Wentz’s original cap reached $ 34.67 million – $ 33.8 million in dead cap)

Lost:

Indianapolis Colts

Acquired:

Lost:

  • 2021 third round selection
  • Second round of 2022 (could be a first round)
  • $ 25.4 million per cap (Wentz’s contract for 2021)

Detroit Lions

Acquired:

  • Choice of the third round in 2021
  • First choice in 2022
  • First round in 2023
  • Jared Goff

Lost:

  • Matthew Stafford
  • $ 13.83 million in room ($ 14 million saved on Stafford contract – $ 27.8 million from Goff contract)

Los Angeles Framework

Acquired:

Lost:

  • 2021 third round selection
  • First choice in 2022
  • First round in 2023
  • Jared Goff
  • $ 7.6 million in cap room ($ 12.4 in Goff savings, $ 20 million in new staff hit from Stafford)

Your opinion on who got the best price depends on whether you follow the short- or long-term approach. The Lions lost the best immediate asset in Matthew Stafford and lost much of the 2021 cap space, but they also scored the best fetch for the future by a large margin.

The Rams got an immediate piece that puts them in the Super Bowl area this year, but they will have to work a few more years without a first round.

As for the other trade, it is difficult for me to label one of these teams as winners. The Eagles got back a decent amount of draft capital, but they got almost no relief for the hood because they sent Wentz away, and that’s nowhere near the draw the Lions got. And while the Colts have enough resources to absorb Wentz’s contract and the draft picks it cost, it feels like a bit too much hubris on Reich’s part. I’m not so sure Wentz is the piece that puts the Colts at the top.

Maybe it’s the Kool-Aid who’s talking, but I think the Lions got the best of their situation from the four teams, and managed to separate in a friendly way with a player.

Your turn.
