As the demand for the coronavirus vaccine in New Jersey grows, the state continues to increase the number of vaccination sites, including the addition of so-called ‘mega-sites’ that can give thousands of shots a day.
As of Sunday, more than 130 vaccination rooms have been published on the state’s website. The state asks people to pre-register and then call to make appointments at specific locations.
The latest sites include four mega-sites for coronavirus vaccination at Moorestown Mall in Burlington County, Rowan College of South Jersey in Gloucester County, the New Jersey Convention and Exposition Center in Middlesex County and Rockaway Townsquare in Morris County. Two additional mega-sites will later open in East Rutherford and Atlantic City.
Government officials said the mega-sites would eventually have the capacity to vaccinate up to 2,000 people a day. At present, however, the federal government does not provide enough doses to make this happen.
The shots were initially given to health care workers, long-term caregivers, others in congregations, police and firefighters.
But Murphy announced Wednesday that anyone 65 or older and those between the ages of 16 and 64 with specific medical conditions could make appointments for vaccinations from today.
This includes 1.47 million who are 65 years and older, 2 million smokers and up to 1 million others with chronic health conditions. (Smokers are considered a high risk health condition).
In the next six months, New Jersey plans to vaccinate about 4.7 million people. According to state and federal officials, the general public should be able to receive the vaccinations by April or May.
Here is the latest list of vaccination sites listed by the state, although the availability of doses may affect appointment times. Stocks can also fluctuate daily as the federal government sends more vaccines to states.
