WhatsApp to continue with privacy update despite setback

February 18 (Reuters) – Facebook Inc’s WhatsApp said on Thursday that it will continue with its controversial privacy policy update, but will allow users to read it at their own pace and also display a banner with additional information.

The messaging platform set new terms in January, which were aimed at increasing business transactions on the platform.

By updating the policy, owner Facebook and its affiliates can collect user data, including their phone number and location, which has caused a worldwide call and a rush of new users to, among others, competitors Telegram and Signal.

WhatsApp then postponed the new policy launch from May to February and tried to make it clear that the update is aimed at enabling users to mess with businesses and that it will not affect personal conversations, which continues to end-to-end will have end-coding.

In his latest blog post, WhatsApp said it will start reminding users to review and accept updates to continue using the messaging platform.

“We have also included more information to address issues we are hearing,” he said. (Reporting by Shubham Kalia in Bengaluru; Edited by Krishna Chandra Eluri)
