What to do if you can not make Android Auto calls

Earlier this year, an error broke through Google Assistant calls in Android Auto after updating users to Android 11.. Google fixed the issue shortly thereafter with a system update, but the error still appears to some users even after the patch is installed. Fortunately, there seems to be a solution in the end. According to a post on Google’s support forums, the problem is caused by incorrect configuration of app permissions, at least for some users.

It’s easy to fix the persistent Android Auto call error, but first you need to confirm that you are on the latest version of Android and Android Auto, in any case. Go to your phone Settings> System> Advanced> System Update. Type “Check for update” then perform the installation if a patch is available. Then see if there is a new version of the Android Auto app available.

If you are using Android Auto via a touch screen in your car, you will also need to update the firmware of your vehicle. Updating your car’s firmware depends on the make and model, but the steps should be readily available on the manufacturer’s support page.

If everything’s up to date but Google Assistant calls are still not working in Android Auto, try this:

  1. While using Android Auto, ask Google Assistant to start a call, or tap the “Phone” icon. Do not do this while driving, of course.
  2. A pop-up will appear on your Android device (or the touch screen of your car) asking which app you want to use for the phone call. Select your phone application and then tap “Always” when prompted. Make sure you type “Always,” and not “Only once” otherwise you have to repeat the steps.

This small adjustment may seem like all you need to do to get Google Assistant calls working in Android Auto again, but it may not work for everyone. Let us know if customizing these settings worked for you, or if you know of other solutions.
