According to downdetector.com, a website and application monitoring service, it started around 9:30 p.m.
By 1 a.m. Saturday, it appears the issue has been resolved.
“We are investigating reports that some people are currently required to sign in again to gain access to their Facebook accounts,” the company said in a statement. “We believe it was due to a configuration change and we are working to get things back to normal as soon as possible.”
The mass login was quickly followed up with memes from users, as well as some conspiracy theories.
In an irony (or genius, depending on your perspective), Facebook posted a follow-up note about the outage on Twitter.
So Facebook heard that it was a “configuration change”.
👏👏👏 to the engineers who solved the problem and patiently tried to explain the cause to us. https://t.co/AUARhCZ7W2
