Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry may have only influenced his Olympic team-mate after knocking out Gregg Popovich’s San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday.
Curry had earlier expressed his interest in playing for the 2020 Olympics, the four-year match that has since been rescheduled to 2021. Popovich will man the side of Team USA, with Steve Kerr as his assistant. After the Warriors’ 114-91 victory over the Spurs, Coach Pop apparently changed his mind.
After the Dubs victory, Kerr said in his post-press that Pop jokingly told him that he was no longer considering Steph for Team USA after embarrassing him.
“He told me after the game that he had considered Steph for the Olympic team, but he said that Steph had embarrassed him tonight that he was no longer eligible,” Kerr said. Nick Friedell of ESPN.
Jokes aside, it’s not hard to understand Gregg Popovich’s statement. Stephen Curry finally exploded for 32 points on an effective 11-of-20 shooting against the Spurs – as the only player to score more than 20 in the game. The Warriors superstar also scored four rebounds and two assists to put Golden State ahead by 24 points at one point.
The Spurs’ latest performance is a stark contrast to their previous outing against the Warriors that led them to the W, 105-100. While Curry also scored 32 in the power play, Pop and Co were able to respond offensively behind DeMar DeRozan and Dejounte Murray.
For what it’s worth, Coach pop Steph wants to consider for Team USA at the Olympics, as the All-Star shooter clearly has one of the best seasons of his career in an individual standpoint. Kerr.
