Wham’s ‘Last Christmas’ completes 36-year journey to UK Chart Summit

‘Last Christmas’, which has never been better than number 2 so far, received 9.2 million streams on the latest stage. And it did so on the fourth anniversary of George Michael’s death.

“I am delighted, somewhat surprised and deeply pleased that Wham!’S iconic Christmas classic Past Christmas has finally achieved the honor of becoming a No. 1,” Wham founding member Andrew Ridgeley wrote on social media. “It’s a fitting tribute 2 to George’s songwriting genius and 1 of which he would be very proud of and completely excited about.”

Now ‘Last Christmas’ could shake off the unwanted title as the UK’s top-selling single to never reach number one, with 1.9 million combined sales since its release.

The record is now being transferred to Maroon 5’s “Moves Like Jagger” with Christina Aguilera, which has 1.55 million “pure” sales, reports the OCC.

While Wham is a fifth map leader, 28 holiday tracks influence the Top 40, including Jose Feliciano’s classic ‘Feliz Navidad’ (BMG), which makes its 50th debut about 50 years after its release. It’s 44-40 higher.

Each title in the Top 10 indeed has a Christmas theme, with the exception of Little Mix’s ‘Sweet Melody’ (RCA), 20-9.

The Christmas bells are still ringing on the Official UK Albums Chart, led by Michael Buble’s Christmas (Reprise) blockbuster.

Christmas lifted 5-1 in his 90th week on the survey, for his fourth non-consecutive period during the summit. Originally released in October 2011, Christmas this week Taylor Swift’s Always (EMI), unchanged at number 2.

Playboi Carti’s Billboard 200 leader is the highest new entry this week Whole Lotta Red (Interscope). It’s new at number 17 in the UK
