A strong earthquake shook Indonesia on Wednesday morning, but no tsunami alert was issued for the country or the Oregon coast.

Western Indonesia shook a strong quake earthquake on Wednesday, but no injuries were reported immediately.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the magnitude 6.2 earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers (six miles) and was 217 kilometers (135 miles) southwest of the city of Bengkulu in the province of Bengkulu on the southwestern side of the island of Sumatra.

No tsunami alert was issued by the Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics and no casualties were reported immediately.

Indonesia, a vast archipelago of 271 million people, is regularly hit by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis due to its location on the “Ring of Fire”, an arc of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific basin.
