West Virginia officials inadvertently gave 42 people a treatment with COVID-19 antibodies instead of Moderna’s vaccine.
The National Guard in West Virginia said in a statement that it ‘learned’ from a bug ‘on Wednesday that led to the individuals receiving Regeneron’s COVID-19 antibody treatment instead of the vaccine.
The national guard said the individuals had been contacted and that the Department of Health and Human Services in West Virginia would follow up on these individuals as an extra precaution.
The incident took place in a vaccination clinic hosted by the Boone County Department of Health.
In a separate statement Posted on Facebook on Thursday, the department said that ‘it has been determined that it was an isolated incident’, adding that the individuals will be offered the vaccine.
The health department and the national guard both said they did not believe the individuals could pose the risk.
It is unclear how the mixing took place. Julie Miller, an administrator of the health department, did not give additional details about the incident.
The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Services also did not provide further details.
The Food and Drug Administration has issued an emergency use authorization for the treatment of antibodies in late november for the treatment of mild to moderate COVID-19 in adults and for children at least 12 years of age who are at high risk of progressing to serious diseases.

The incident is not the only one that has occurred while states want to vaccinate their populations.
Earlier this week, an employee at a Wisconsin medical center “intentionally” removed 57 vials of Moderna’s vaccine from a freezer and caused it to be discarded.
