West Coast Cities Break Out During Violence at Breonna Taylor Anniversary

Major cities on the West Coast were among those who rioted and saw protests Saturday night as protesters marked the one-year anniversary of the death of Breonna Taylor in a police raid in Louisville, Kentucky.

Los Angeles, Seattle and Portland have all seen clashes between crowds and police, with numerous arrests.

In Los Angeles, some protesters smashed shop windows and pelted police officers in Hollywood with stones.

On social media videos, police officers were shown in riot near the intersection of Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street near the Hollywood Walk of Fame. One video on social media showed a protester jumping on a police cross while driving away.

At least one officer was injured in the clashes, police said according to a report by KNBC-TV in Los Angeles. The condition of the officer was not reported.

It was unclear whether protesters were injured.

According to KNBC and videos on social media, Bed Bath and Beyond, a CVS pharmacy and an Asian restaurant, are under damage by rioters.

Police are not taken immediately reported and protesters arrested.

Earlier, hundreds of protesters marched and celebrated Taylor’s life peacefully in Hollywood and other parts of the city.

Seattle

In Seattle, videos posted on social media early Sunday showed police taking aggressive action against protesters.

One video shows police arresting on bicycles, while another video shows police in a van following a group of marchers.

Earlier, a violent clash broke out when police used pepper spray against a crowd.

A downtown Starbucks store has been spotted with broken windows and spray-painted messages on the outside.

Police also monitored a group who, according to their construction signs and other objects, dragged them into the street, to make an apparent attempt to block vehicles.

The Seattle Police Department tweeted Saturday around 4 p.m. ET that they had made 13 arrests.

Portland

In Portland, a downtown federal courthouse appears to be the most important scene for another face-off with authorities.

Just one night earlier, police had made 13 arrests and ‘kettled’ about 100 protesters before they were reportedly able to leave one by one.

Last week’s protests outside the court took place shortly after authorities removed a barrier outside the building.

On Saturday night and Sunday morning, new messages were spray-painted outside the courthouse, including: “The police are murderers.”

Taylor, who was black, was killed on March 13, 2020 when a group of Louisville metropolitan police officers entered her apartment on a raid.

Taylor’s boyfriend shot at the officers and thought they were burglars, he later told police and the officers fired back. Taylor was shot dead in the crossfire by officers.

Officers later said they had announced their presence in the apartment. No drugs were found inside.

Taylor’s family and their supporters called for the prosecution of police officers in the city who took part in the raid that led to Taylor’s death. Three police officers have been fired and one detective is charged with shooting in adjacent apartments during the raid, but no one has been charged in connection with Taylor’s death.

Authorities in Kentucky stress that their investigation is continuing.

There were also protests and celebrations of her life in Louisville Saturday.

“Eyes are in Louisville, Kentucky today, so let’s show America what the community there looks like,” Taylor’s aunt, Bianca Austin, told a group in the city on Saturday, KABC-TV in Los Angeles reported.
