A video of an Indian flag hoisted before Donald Trump supporters rioted at Capitol Hill in Washington DC on Wednesday sparked controversy in India after several media channels in the mainstream claimed that the man waving the flag ” is a proponent of Congress MP Shashi Tharoor.
“I will show you how Shashi Tharoor fell into his own trap,” India TV chairwoman Rajat Sharma told his viewers in a January 8 broadcast. Sharma refers to Tharoor’s tweet and said: “There are some Indians with the same mentality as the Trumpist mob, who like to use the flag as a weapon rather than a badge of pride …”.

While neither the Bharatiya Janata party nor Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned Tharoor’s statement, Sharma said: ‘The person whose act was used to condemn Narendra Modi is a supporter of Shashi Tharoor. The man who raised the tricolor during the attack on the US Parliament is Vincent Xavier Palathingal … He is full of praise for Shashi Tharoor. He is seen eating lunch with Shashi Tharoor in this photo from 11 April 2015. Our team has excavated the complete biodata of Vincent … ”
Several other mainstream news channels claim that the man who hoisted the Indian flag is not a Mod supporter but a supporter of the Congress MP. “The left-liberal cabal in India has linked Xavier to ‘Hindu-Bhakt’ groups, and Tharoor said there are a number of Indians with the same mentality as the Trumpist mob,” Times Now wrote.

The Times of India published a fact-checking report with this unusual choice of words: ‘One of the men who waved the Indian flag on Wednesday during the siege of Capitol Hill by a pro-Trump mob is described as’ bhakt’ (a pejorative term used by anti-Hindus to describe Hindus and those who support Prime Minister Narendra Modi by a section of social media users. ”The term ‘anti-Hindus’ has now been removed.

Ironically, the alleged fact-checking refers to a tweet from @BefittingFacts as a ‘warning Twitter user’. This handle often shares incorrect information and has been featured in several Alt News stories.

Journalist Ashish Singh and Vikas Saraswat tweeted about Xavier’s alleged connection to Tharoor. NDTV published a story with tweets questioning Tharoor. However, the organization did not attempt to investigate details other than those circulated on social media.
The Pro-BJP website OpIndia also quickly jumped on the bandwagon.
Unfortunately for liberals, the person wearing the Indian flag was not a ‘Hindu Supremacist’, nor was he a supporter of Narendra Modi. He was Vincent Xavier and he is a big supporter of senior leader of Congress, Shashi Tharoor. Welphttps: //t.co/H4XnRds1kO

Premature, misleading reports
Media organizations reporting on Vincent Xavier’s alleged support to Shashi Tharoor have based their inferences on his social media posts. While the man has criticized several policies of Modi found, he was also explicitly found appraisal the prime minister at times.
Vincent Xavier is a member of the Republican Party in Virginia. In an interview with India Today, he said: ‘I have no real close relationship with any politician in India. I already live in this country [US] for 28 years. I have always been interested in American community activities. Whenever political leaders come, I have done many opportunities in their home for them. I celebrated an occasion with Shashi Tharoor, interviewed him. This is the photo you see. I do not know if he even remembers me. ”
He added: ‘I’m not really a Congress politician or anything. I’m a proponent of whoever [is] a good leader in India. I possess a very market-oriented capitalist philosophy, so I’m not really a big fan of whatever the socialists do. So it’s a shame to associate me with Shashi Tharoor as a close man by Varun Gandhi. AAs for me, as far as the policy of the government is concerned, I like the policy of the BJP government because it is more business friendly. Although I do not agree with some of their ideals. I am therefore politically, ideologically speaking, more attached to the BJP than to Congress. I have no close connection with Shashi Tharoor. ”
This part of his interview can be watched in about 4.30 minutes in the broadcast below.

Apart from Shashi Tharoor, Xavier also has a photo with BJP MPs Poonam Mahajan and Meenakshi Lekhi.

In a Facebook post in September 2018, Xavier described how he was attached to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh in his childhood.
Was Vincent Xavier the only person holding the Indian flag?
While the focus of most stories was Vincent Xavier, there were other people in the group who hoisted the Indian flag. Among them was the member of Virat Hindustan Sangam, Krishna Gudipati associated with the Republican Party. This was first noticed by the Twitter user @dronkjoernalis. He’s the man in the red jacket in the video below shared by Xavier and later filmed.
Gudipati was spotted in several photos with Xavier at Capitol Hill. These photos were also shared by Xavier and later deleted.

He was seen observed in the same red jacket in a 2018 interview with ANI. His recently deleted LinkedIn profile photo fits his facial features in another interview ANI gave in 2017 about the “Howdy Modi” event in Houston.

He can be seen in a photo uploaded by BJP MP Subramanian Swamy in 2018.

The mainstream media attempted to hoist the group the Indian flag during riots by Trump supporters on Capitol Hill as supporters of Congress. However, both Vincent Xavier and Krishna Gudipati are supporters of Trump and are politically inclined to the BJP in India.
