Wednesday’s Addams live-action series, directed by Tim Burton, lands on Netflix

On Wednesday, Addams gets her own Netflix series.

In a Twitter announcement Wednesday, Netflix has announced that a new series of live action based on Addams will be appearing on the streaming platform soon. Directed by Tim Burton, who is making his television directorial debut.

“Tim Burton brings Addams to Netflix on Wednesday in a live series of coming of age!” Netflix wrote in its announcement. “Burton will also make his TV debut on the penetrating, supernatural mystery that follows Wednesday as a student at the Nevermore Academy.”

Added was a photo of the show’s official poster, featuring a silhouette of the iconic Wednesday playing the double bass with a striking string. Because of the strange manners of Wednesday, she is seen playing the instrument with a knife instead of the usual bow.

Teddy Biaselli, director of Netflix’s original series, gave more insight into the upcoming series in an announcement via Netflix’s website.

“The upcoming series of eight installments is a pervasive, supernatural mystery that unfolds Wednesday’s years as a student at the quirky Nevermore Academy,” Biaselli said. ‘Wednesday’s attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, stop a monstrous assassination attempt that terrorized the local city and solve the supernatural mystery that plagued her parents 25 years ago – all while she was searching for her new and very tangled relationships of the foreign and diverse student body. ‘

The series will be written by Smallville co-creators Al Gough and Miles Millar. Biaselli expressed excitement about the future collaboration between the co-creators of Smallville and Burton.

“When we first heard Al Gough and Miles Millar’s pitch for Wednesday, we were struck like an arrow by a crossbow in our hearts,” Biaselli said. “They nailed the tone, the spirit and the characters, but we gave a fresh way to this story.”

“We then got the call that the visionary director and lifelong fan of Addams Family, Tim Burton, wanted to make his debut on television director with this series,” he added. “Tim has had a history of empowering stories about social outsiders like Edward Scissorhands, Lydia Deitz and Batman. And now he’s bringing his unique vision to Wednesday and her haunting classmates at Nevermore Academy.”

No official release date has been announced.
