Police in Washington, DC, on Monday released a photo of the knife the suspect used in Friday’s deadly car crash at a U.S. Capitol checkpoint that killed one officer and injured another.

The Metropolitan Police Department said its detectives, in conjunction with the U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) and the FBI, are investigating the attack as a homicide.

Officer William Evans, an 18-year veteran of the force, died Friday after the driver stormed into the barrier near the Capitol at about 1 p.m. last Friday. The driver, identified as 25-year-old Noah Green, crashed into officers and the barrier when he left the car armed with a knife and charged another officer before the officer fatally shot him.

DC Fire and EMS personnel responded to the scene and transported the suspect and the second injured USCP officer to a hospital for treatment.

The suspect – who was later identified as 25-year-old Noah Green – was pronounced dead at the hospital. The second officer injured was later discharged from the hospital.

In the chaotic moments after the attack, law enforcement officers initially believed that the suspect, who was seen on a video, hurled a knife at the officers, possibly stabbing Evans, but this was not the case.

The investigation continues, but there is no indication that Evans was stabbed, cut or shot, a U.S. police officer in the Capitol said.

Investigators are increasingly focusing on Green’s mental health as they work to identify any motives for the attack. Investigators, according to the official, heard that the suspect was suffering from delusions, paranoia and suicidal thoughts.

In online posts since he was removed, Green describes being under the government’s mind control and says he is being watched. He described himself as a follower of the Nation of Islam and its longtime leader, Louis Farrakhan, and spoke of a difficult time he had leaned on his faith.
