Wayne County increases vaccinations, receives more doses from the state

DETROIT After government officials met with Wayne County CEO Warren Evans, Wayne County will receive 8,375 first doses of the state’s COVID-19 vaccine next week, an increase from the 4,350 doses Wayne County received this week. .

However, the supply remains insufficient to accelerate vaccinations of healthcare providers, educators and other essential workers who are currently of high priority.

“I fight to ensure that Wayne County receives the amount of doses based on a fair and equitable formula that reflects our population, the greater the social vulnerability of many of our residents and our status as Michigan’s most diverse province,” said Evans. “I appreciate that the state is distributing a very limited vaccine supply to the entire state, but I think more work is needed to ensure a reliable and equitable supply.”

Evans said he met with government officials in Lansing on Thursday because the public health department in Wayne County received fewer vaccinations than health departments in other, less populous provinces.

The difference in vaccine allocation slows down Wayne County’s efforts to vaccinate high-priority health care providers, educators and other essential workers under the state’s Phase 1A and Phase 1B distribution plan, Evans said.

Under an agreement between Wayne County and local health systems, residents 65 and older are vaccinated by those health systems.

“I will continue to push the state of Michigan until the Wayne County Public Health Division receives the amount of vaccine needed to meet the needs of its residents,” Evans said.
