Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Japan was to open sometime this week, and Universal lifted the embargo for early coverage of one of the park’s biggest attractions: Mario Kart row.
The people who work at Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge handing out safety goggles to the guests, and an early visitor shot a video through the goggles to approach the experience of what it is like to be on the ride. See below.

Let’s talk about the rope area before we ride. Man, that sucker is tall. The person who shot this video took more than 15 minutes to just go through it and see the information video on how the headphones should be locked in place – and it looks like they attended it on a press day or something where practical no one was in line before them out. Imagine for a second you were transposed into the karmic driven world of Earl. It probably sounds like heaven to some, but to me it sounds like a nightmare. At least there are plenty of details to admire in the extensive recreation of Bowser’s Castle, including its library, which contains books with amusing titles such as ‘Sibling Rivalries and How to Exploit Them’ on its shelves.
As for the ride itself, I’ll just come out and say it: this video makes it look pretty shitty. Years of Mario Kart have linked the experience in my mind with speed, and it’s a bumpy, almost winding ride that does not feel propelling at all. But – and this is a big and important caveat – sticking a camera lens through a pair of AR glasses is not the same as wearing it on your head, so I guess it really is not that flat and does not look dull like this video. imply.
Yet there is a sense of chaos here that seems like it will be difficult to overcome in any context. Mario Kart can certainly feel chaotic at times, but as a player you can exercise some control over what happens; For Koopa’s Challenge to work, it must reduce the amount of control you have, leading to a lesser version of something like Toy Story Midway Mania at Disney’s California Adventure.
Super Nintendo World would open on February 4, 2021, but was recently delayed indefinitely due to COVID-19.
