The War on Drugs returned late last night to deliver a virtual performance of ‘Arms Like Boulders’ The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.
After the premiere of their new song “Ocean of Darkness” via a similar virtual setup on an October episode of The Tonight Show, dug the band deep into the catalog for their latest appearance and played a track from their 2008 debut album Wagonwheel Blues. The #PlayAtHome performance featured all six orchestra members on string instruments, with five guitars and one mandolin.
The visit to the war on drugs’ late show was in support of their recent live album Live drugs, with tracks from more than 40 hard drives recorded at the group’s shows from around the years. The LP contains tracks from the group’s four studio albums and a cover of Warren Zevon’s “Accidentally Like a Martyr.”
“As an orchestra leader, I always want to know where a song can go,” lead singer Adam Granduciel said in a statement. ‘Even if we picked it up, mastered it, put it out and toured it, it does not mean that we should just do it the same way forever … It feels like it’s a kind of reset capable of putting out something that a very good interpretation is of the way we interpret music live. Although this recording comes from a year of touring, it really is how these six guys developed from 2014 to 2019 as a band. ‘
