Sonas is ready to be a fast, smooth-as-his-action platformer Hyper Light Drifter studio Heart Machine, and now there’s a trailer to prove it.
Heart Machine showed off for the first time Sonas in June during Sony’s big PlayStation 5 gaming event, but we did not take a good look at the game until the current Live States of States. The Sonas the preview of the game contains footage recorded on PS5, revealing an expansive environment in which Rei, a Voidrunner in the lead role, is rescuing her planet from a black hole devouring worlds. The game is fast and fluid, with the focus on skating over the ash clouds and jumping between platforms and cutting enemies along the way.
Hyper Light Drifter was a hit 2D action RPG that appeared in 2016, and Sonas is a faithful evolution of creative director Alx Preston’s aesthetics. It transforms the studio’s brand of neon-lined, glowing art style into a 3D environment, placing a small yet powerful protagonist at the center of a vast and terrifying world.
Sonas goes to PlayStation 4, PS5 and the Epic Games Store later this year. It is published by Annapurna Interactive.
Hyper Light Drifter co-designer Teddy Dief is also working on a new project, We are OFK, with their studio at Palmtree Team. We are OFK is a musical interactive series about four friends in their early twenties trying to make it as a band in contemporary Los Angeles, and it has a decidedly more pastel palette than Hyper Light Drifter – of Sonas, for that matter.
