Duke lost his third straight game on Saturday, falling to Louisville, 70-65, and falling to 5-5 this season – his worst start in more than 35 years. The game was close throughout, and Duke missed three potential shots or game buttons in the last minute.
This immediately led to an awkward moment with the media.
During a press conference by coach Mike Krzyzewski, a student reporter for Duke’s newspaper, The Chronicle, Coach K asked a question, which led to an exchange of words between the two.
“I’m just curious what the next step is for the team,” the reporter asked.
“Yes, why do we not evaluate this game,” Krzyzewski said. ‘I’m not concerned with what our next step forward is. We just finished a hard game. I do not know when … What is your major? ‘
The reporter did not respond immediately, so Krzyzewski asked again.
“What’s your major at Duke?” Ask Coach K. When the reporter did not respond again, he asked, “What is your most difficult class?”
“Econ,” the reporter replied.
‘Say you’ve just had the toughest eco-test in the world,’ Krzyzewski said, ‘and when you walk out, someone asks you,’ What’s your next step? ‘Look what I mean? Do you have a degree of empathy? ‘
‘Just give us time to evaluate this game,’ he continues, ‘and then we’ll find out – as we always try to do – what the next step will be. The next step, of course, will be to prepare for Georgia Tech. How we prepare for them – that’s what we’ll need to find out. ”
