Washington Franchises G Brandon Scherff

For the second consecutive March, Brandon Scherff will be part of a franchise transaction. Washington is once again handcuffing its leading offensive linebacker via the label, JP Finlay, NBC Sports Washington tweets.

Because Scherff played on the label last season, he will carry a hefty price tag. It will cost Washington $ 18.04 million to mark the six-year veteran guard. The parties hope to conclude a long-term agreement; to do so would reduce Scherff’s cap of 2021. However, Washington will have enough headroom. Even after the label, the team holds over $ 35 million.

Scherff, who joined Joe Thuney traveled last year as the first guards marked since 2011 Jadeveon Clowney route by playing a fifth-year option season and playing a subsequent season on the label. Unlike Clowney, however, Scherff has now received a second label. The clock taps on its ability to maximize its value. Although he is a 2015 candidate, the four-time Pro Bowl blocker will turn 30 later this year.

Washington ended a messy divorce with Trent Williams last year, leaving Scherff as the cornerstone O-line man. While Scherff has struggled with a number of injuries over the past few years, he has returned to his latest form to the best form. Returning from an MCL injury in the early season, Scherff played a key role in elevating Washington to the playoffs again. He won the first team All-Pro honors for the first time.

Washington has until July 15 to finalize an expansion with Scherff. Given its high price, the team is likely to continue efforts to expand Scherff before the start of the free agency on March 17. The price of the Iowa product is the highest salary for a guard this year. As for long-term deals, no guard earns as much salary as Scherff earned on the label last year ($ 15 million). He stands a high price on an extension.
