The Washington club has once again put the franchise label on guard Brandon Scherff, the club announced Monday night. Both sides will continue to reach a long-term agreement, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. Washington has until 3 p.m. on July 16 to sign Scherff on a multi-year contract.

Scherff, who earned just over $ 15 million while playing under the label in 2020, would earn just over $ 18 million for the 2021 season. According to Spotrac, Scherff’s market value is $ 13.7 million per season for three years.

The fifth overall pick in the 2015 draft, the 6-foot-5, 315-pound lineout is an appetizer since its rookie season. A four-time Pro Bowler, Scherff was named an All-Pro for the first time in 2020, despite missing three games with a knee injury. This makes Scherff the first Washington player to be named First-Team All-Pro since player Matt Turk in 1996. Scherff’s game last season helped Washington win its first NFC East title since its rookie season.

The 29-year-old Scherff expressed his desire to stay in Washington shortly after the football team lost to eventual champions Buccaneers in the wild card round.

“I always said I wanted to stay where I was set up,” he said. The Washington Post. “And I’ve been here for six years, and I absolutely love it … We’re building something here to make it absolutely a chance in the future.”

The sentiment is mutual, as offensive coordinator Scott Turner has spoken openly about his desire to keep Washington’s line in line for the next few years.

“These are the leaders who stand before us,” Turner said during the 2020 season. “They did an excellent job, especially Brandon. He brings it every day. He’s the same guy, the toughness, the blueboard mentality. It helps, gives strength and drives our team.”
