Washington made it official Tuesday morning and announced that Jennifer King has been promoted to assistant coach.
She is the first black woman to serve as a full-time assistant coach in the NFL. King spent the 2020 season as coach for Washington.
“Coach King deserves the promotion of the assistant full-back coach. “She was eager to go to Washington for the opportunity to work a full-time coaching intern and learn from our staff,” Washington chief Ron Rivera said in a statement. ‘She got the chance to experience not only the seasonal work that a full-time coach is in this league, but also the countless hours they prepare in the off-season. She showed me all the qualities needed to work full time on my staff. She is a hard worker, a good communicator and a good person.
“Coach King is always eager to learn and has shown tremendous growth since he started here last season. I know she will remain an asset [offensive coordinator Scott] Turner, [running backs coach Randy] Jordan and the running group, and she earned this opportunity with her hard work. The sky is truly the limit for her. ”
King first worked under Rivera in 2018 as an internal receiver coach for the Panthers, and was an internal coach in 2019. She also served as an attacking assistant coach for Dartmouth College in 2019, primarily with wide receivers.
In addition, King joined the Arizona Hotshots coaching staff in the Alliance of American Football in 2019. She was the team’s assistant – wide receiver coach and special teams assistant.
King is the second woman to become a full-time assistant coach in the NFL, after Buccaneers assistant coach Lori Locust.
