Warriors’ Draymond Green calls wild shot vs. Spurs ‘smartest stupid game’

It was the ‘smartest stupid game in history’. At least, that’s what Draymond Green called it.

With 8.7 seconds left in Monday’s game against the San Antonio Spurs and the Warriors, who were three behind, Green hit a long three-point shot when Derrick White extended his arm to Green. Green thought he was on point. But he did not.

Green’s initial reaction to how it all played out: “Damn.”

“I know most people will see it and sit together in pairs and see what’s going on,” Green said. “Very clever game that is ultimately dumb.”

While not the only reason the Warriors lost, it ended their fate in their 105-100 defeat to the Spurs at AT&T Center.

It’s not often that the Green makes a dumb move. Just a few days ago, coach Steve Kerr praised him for being one of the smartest players in the game. But we all have our moments.

Kerr knew the Spurs were not going to offend when they were two ahead with about eight seconds left. Greg Popovich does not like to transgress in such situations.

But Kerr did not convey this message to his players.

“It’s probably my fault for not letting the team know that the Spurs are not usually offending,” Kerr said. “We knew we had 8.7 seconds to drive and kick – lots of options with that kind of time – so we just tried to spread out the floor and look nice.”

When the Warriors hit the ball with 8.7 seconds on the clock, everyone knew who they wanted the ball for – after the two-time NBA MVP who is currently shooting 42.5 percent from the three-point distance. But instead it went to Green, who shot 18.9 percent from distance.

Green had good intentions with the final game when he launched the ball from 40 feet. Like he said, he had the right idea. It just fell back.

“If it works, it’s great,” Steph Curry said. ‘He gets to the line, maybe ties the game with three free throws, or at least makes sure you get a foul and gets to the line to extend the game. But it just did not work that way. . “
