Warner Bros., legendary collision deal over ‘Godzilla vs. Kong ‘to solve (exclusive)

The more than $ 200 million Godzilla is one of two legendary films caught up in Warners’ surprise movement. The situation is more complicated for Dune, although the parties apparently also move close to an agreement on the project. Filmmaker Denis Villeneuve has written passionately about his desire for an exclusive theater series and Legendary supports him, according to the expert source. The film will be released in October, which means theaters will be able to function again while millions are being vaccinated.

According to a source, discussions are underway on different approaches to theater windows and it remains unclear which option will be acceptable to Villeneuve. Another possible problem: it appears that Warners may have used Dune images to promote its streaming service without approval.

A Legendary spokesman declined to comment.

As Warners gives Dune an exclusive release, which can set a precedent that others allow, such as Matrix 4 filmmaker Lana Wachowski, to demand similar treatment. As talks continue, it is unclear whether Warner Media will be able to keep the line on its day-and-date strategy to strengthen its streaming service. Wachowski is reportedly determined to have an exclusive theatrical performance.

Legendaries are considered the most likely of Warners’ financing partners to sue following the studio’s astonishing decision. It financed 75 percent of Godzilla and was willing to accept a Netflix offer of more than $ 225 million for the film. Warners blocked the deal.

Legendaries could reason by challenging the Warners decision that Warner Media unilaterally put the film on its own streamer, self-trading. But Netflix’s November bid effectively set the price Godzilla, which simplifies the negotiation. Legendary still negotiates with talent over Godzilla but it is not expected to derail a transaction. The film’s release date is set for May 21 in theaters, including IMAX, as well as HBO Max. Legendary will release the film in China.

Adam Wingard, known for Netflix’s Death letter and horror movies like You’re next and The gas, aimed Godzilla teen Kong. It stars Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall and Kyle Chandler.
