WandaVision: What happened to Scarlet Witch’s accent?

In Avengers: Endgame, Wanda Maximoff still spoke with an Eastern European accent, but in WandaVision, her accent is gone. What happened?

During her time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Scarlet Witch, or Wanda Maximoff, retained her Eastern European accent. In recent outings, however, it seems to be significantly reduced. And now, in the new Disney + series, WandaVision, it can not be heard at all, although Vision in the first episode blames Wanda’s strange behavior on her Sokovian background. Is it simply a product of Wanda trapped in American sitcoms in an American suburban city, or is there something more going on?

Wanda still had her accent Captain America: Civil War, but a few years later in Avengers: Infinity War, her accent has been significantly reduced. At that point, Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo gave an explanation as to why Wanda’s accent could be heard only slightly.

‘We deliberately tried to strip away that accent for a few reasons … one of the most distinctive features that [Wanda] has, is her accent, “said Joe Russo. If you’re going to try to disguise yourself or want to hide or not get caught, you’re going to try to limit the trigger alerts that make it easy for someone to identify you. , which would include her accent … For us, it was very intentional that we would just strip off that accent to show that she was acclimatizing and hiding. ‘

Since she’s fleeing in the film, it definitely makes sense to lose her accent. Besides, Black Widow, who also comes from Eastern Europe, speaks with an American accent and in the beginning of Civil War, she gives Wanda advice on how to interfere. It is, given Black Widow’s espionage background, not far-fetched to believe that she may have trained Wanda to lose her accent. And since Wanda has been hiding out for a few years to practice, chances are she has permanently adapted to speak differently.

In WandaVision, her accent is completely gone. Since Wanda lives in a world based on old school American sitcoms, it would make sense to talk like the characters. In fact, she may be adopting an American accent in an attempt to blend into the suburban environment, just as she and Vision are actively hiding their unusual abilities.

Wanda can also create the world of the show based on her knowledge of American sitcoms. Growing up in Sokovia, it is possible that as a child she had access to sitcoms and thus built her ideal life image with Vision around it. As part of this, she may have made the decision to get rid of her accent using her reality-shifting ability so she can live the perfect suburban sitcom life she envisions.

Like the episodes of WandaVision progress, we can learn more about how Wanda’s sitcom world works and get a better idea of what happened to her accent. For now, though, she seems to have learned to suppress most of it while on the run and has now learned to use an American accent to blend in with the rest of the suburban characters.

WandaVision was written by Jac Schaeffer and directed by Matt Shakman, and Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff / Scarlet Witch, Paul Bettany as Vision, Randall Park as Agent Jimmy Woo, Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau and Kathryn Hahn as Agnes . New episodes air on Friday + Disney.
