WandaVision Showrunner reveals some MCU characters were out of bounds

WandaVision presenter Jac Schaeffer says some Marvel characters were not included in the Scarlet Witch and Vision’s MCU Disney + show.

WandaVision showrunner Jac Schaeffer says some Marvel Cinematic Universe characters were out of bounds to include in the show. Phase 4 of the MCU will introduce several new characters, but it also enhances the roles of others that have been around for a while. Wanda Maximoff, aka Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany), has been part of the MCU since Phase 2. WandaVision this is the first time they are at the forefront of a story.

With only four episodes released so far, WandaVision has already proven that it has done nothing but the MCU before. The fake / changed reality of the program with the witch and Android couple living in a sitcom suburb is very different. And while WandaVision focuses on Scarlet Witch and Vision, and the series also features several other characters with MCU history. Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings), Jimmy Woo (Randall Park) and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) are all back. Promote the use of other MCU characters WandaVision‘s connection to the rest of the shared universe, but that does not mean that any character could appear.

In a new interview with Digital Spy, Jac Schaeffer, showrunner, was asked about the creative process of making WandaVision. Schaeffer started her with the MCU Captain Marvel rewritten and was then hired to write Black widow. While the development of WandaVision, she was asked if Marvel gives her full control over which characters she should include. Schaeffer said she gets a large list of characters available to use.

These are not free rein. [Marvel has its] ideas and larger interconnected pieces. So there were characters that were introduced to me – a larger list of characters. With Randall Park and Kat Dennings, I was like: it’s an excuse to work with two people I admire so, so, so much. And also, I saw a very clear way how they could fit.

With complete free rein in which characters can appear WandaVision or any MCU property is practically impossible at this stage. The MCU currently has 25 films and TV shows in various stages of development. In many cases, the movies and programs build on each other to create the larger MCU story. This is the best explanation why Marvel sets some limits on which characters may use a project and which may not. And because several of these projects overlap production schedules, there is also the actual logistics of an actor available that can limit which characters are viable options.

The good news for WandaVision viewers are that Schaeffer is excited about the cast she got at the end of the day. The program already contains five characters from previous MCU properties, but there are still several deliveries. There is no shortage of speculation that other famous characters such as Ultron, Quicksilver and Doctor Strange have appeared before WandaVision end. There are also many theories about other Marvel characters from the comics that could make their debut, such as Mephisto, Nightmare and Wonder Man. So even though Schaeffer was somewhat limited in the list of characters at her disposal, it does not seem so WandaVision will short Marvel favorites.
