Here’s what’s happening in the world of television on Friday 15th January and Saturday 16th January. All times are Eastern.

Top choices

WandaVision (Disney +, 3:01 p.m., premiere of the series): “With two deliveries that are fun sitcom parodies and a third that ends as a vague horror of a Marvel movie, WandaVision has a decisive entry in the MCU canon. After all, where does a TV show go if it was already a black-and-white sitcom, a slightly savory comedy with a high concept, and a super-powered mystery with potentially enormous consequences for the wider universe? This is hard to say, because such an achievement has never been done before, and it now makes sense because of the MCU’s seemingly bottomless – yet often frugal utilization – storytelling potential. WandaVision is harnessing a power that the MCU has been sitting on for a decade, and like Wanda tearing Thanos apart in Endgame, it’s time for us to see what this thing can really do. ” Read the rest of Sam Barsanti’s preview of WandaVision.

A night in Miami … (Amazon Prime Video, 00:01, Friday): “The film begins with a series of informative vignettes that peek at each character at a particularly low point. These include a young Cassius (Eli Goree) struggling in public to prove his worth in the boxing ring, as well as Sam (Leslie Odom Jr.)’s difficult performance in the Copacabana which is strained by the counter-blackness of the crowd and staff. Pulling the focus away from the play’s simple setting has a slight downside: it gives the film a somewhat slow start, rather than the expectation that it is likely intended to build. However, it gives the task to each figure to face their deepest insecurities as black men in America – a dutiful touch that adds additional context to their eventual gathering. ‘ Read the rest of Shannon Miller’s review of A night in Miami … Directed by Regina King, Kingsley also stars Ben-Adir and Aldis Hodge.

Servant (Apple TV +, Friday, 12:01): In sy overview of season two of Servant, Writes Alex McLevy, ‘To say where the show is going in the second season would be to quickly enter a devastated area; By the end of the third installment, enough noticeable twists yielded sufficient material for the entire season of an average series.
