WandaVision: Can Scarlet Witch get pregnant and have children with Vision?

Young married couples can hardly get along without an older family member asking when they are going to have children. And you can not make WandaVision without comic book lovers asking if they are going to have children, just like in the comics.

But “Do the Scarlet Witch and the Vision Have Children?” is a more complicated matter than you might think, and the answers are simultaneously ‘Yes’, ‘No, they are dead’ and ‘Yes, they are now teenage superheroes’. Let’s unpack it.

[Ed. note: If you want to go into WandaVision without knowing anything about the show, skip this post. There are some comics details that might be considered spoilers, and spoilers for the series’ second episode.]

Thanks to Marvel Studios

In the second episode of WandaVision ends with a surprise and a big tease: Wanda’s sudden pregnancy. But frankly, it’s no stranger than Wanda or Vision’s powers – or that they seem trapped in a world that is stuttering every day through a new decade of sitcom history.

In the comics, Wanda and the Vision do have children. Known so, you might say. And while we can not say whether it will be so in the show, here is the background of the comics that the producers of WandaVision could pull out.

Billy and Tommy’s excellent adventure

In Marvel comic continuity, the Scarlet Witch and Vision have twin sons: Billy Kaplan and Tommy Shepherd. Billy, who goes through Wiccan (or Asgardian, or Demiurge), inherited the magical, mighty powers of the Scarlet Witch. Tommy, who goes to Speed, chased Wanda’s own twin brother Pietro / Quicksilver. He’s very fast, you see.

You may be wondering why Billy and Tommy have different surnames, and why none of the surnames are Wanda’s. This is because they are actually the reincarnations of the dead twins of the Scarlet Witch and Vision, unknowingly raised by two different sets of parents from birth.

The Scarlet Witch and the Vision were married in the 1975s Avengers # 4, and in 1986s The Vision and the Scarlet Witch, the two had some twin sons, Billy and Tommy. How does a robot get kids? Well, you do not have to worry about biological logistics if your wife is a witch who can use her powers to turn magical energy into real babies.

But comics are not friendly to couples who are faced with tedious story barriers such as “who cares for the kids while we fight bad guys” and “given the short time of superhero comics, how old are these babies anyway?” 1989’s Avengers West Coast # 52, was revealed that the babies were made from hell energy, and Mephisto wanted it back. The supreme devil of Marvel comics made the baby of the Wanda and Vision and they were childless again (and divorced, for unrelated reasons).

Wiccan and Speed, the reincarnated baby boys of the Scarlet Witch and Vision, on the cover of Young Avengers Presents # 3, Marvel Comics (2008). They both wear sparkly costumes. Wiccan is equipped with a headband and tattered red cloak, while Speed wears glasses with yellow lenses and his hair is completely white.

In the 2000s, Billy and Tommy were again portrayed as teen superheroes and recruited into the Young Avengers team. During a series of adventures, they discover that Mephisto has not reabsorbed the success of baby Billy and Tommy’s soul. These souls were reincarnated as the sons of normal people were Jeff and Rebecca Kaplan and Frank and Mary Shepherd respectively.

Although they had different moms and dads and grew up in different families, Billy and Tommy looked like each other and were twins. And the Scarlet Witch was their mother, and the Vision was their father.

Is WandaVision going to use a lot of this?

Probably not, and that’s fine. Maybe Wanda and Vision will have twin babies with superpowers. Maybe they will have twin babies who are ultimately a great magician. Maybe they just have normal twin babies (although the outcome is so mundane that it is the least likely event).

All we can say now is that Wanda definitely looks pregnant, and there are many different comic book elements that the makers of WandaVision can pull out to make it as weird as possible.
