Walmart shooting in Glenolden, Delaware County linked to Darby’s absence: police

DARBY, Pennsylvania (WPVI) – Police in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, are searching for an armed suspect after an altercation and a shooting at a Walmart in Darby. Police tracked down the suspect to his home in Darby Borough and evicted the building for several hours, only to find that he was not there. Police did not disclose the suspect’s identity.

“The subject I would say is armed and potentially dangerous,” Chief Mike Sousa told Darby Township Police.

Police say it started at about 8:30 a.m. Sunday at the Walmart on MacDade Boulevard in Darby Township after the suspect and an employee had an altercation. The couple ended up in the foyer in front of the store when police said the suspect fired one shot at the employee. The shot was missed and no one was injured.

“From what we received in the store, it’s just a random act. These two did not know each other. It was a kind of verbal argument the suspect had with the employee about a video game sale,” Sousa said. .

Police say after fleeing Walmart, he was involved in another incident in Upper Darby and believe he returned to his home on 400 Main Street in Darby Borough.

Several agencies responded, including officers in SWAT equipment, which surrounded his residence and blocked the street. Police now believe the suspect fled his home before officers arrived there.

“We used the emergency response team to locate the suspect. We cannot locate him now,” said Darby Borough police chief Joseph Gabe.

Police arrested two of the suspects’ vehicles, including the white Chevy Impala parked near his home.

“He may have been on foot or someone picked him up,” Sousa said.

Walmart has issued a statement saying it is cooperating with authorities and that the store is expected to reopen on Monday.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the police.
