Walgreens pharmacy in Monroe distributes salt, not vaccine, to 22 – WSOC TV

MONROE, NC – A Walgreens pharmacy in Monroe gave a small amount of people an injection of salt instead of a COVID-19 vaccine last month, the company said Monday.

Walgreens spokeswoman Erin Loverher said 22 people in one place were affected by the mixture at the pharmacy on March 20 and that they would receive their second shot this past weekend.

“In accordance with CDC recommendations, we reached all affected patients and administered a COVID-19 vaccination as soon as the patients involved were available to return to the pharmacy,” Loverher said in a statement.

She said pharmacists sometimes use saline solutions during training and that there is no reason to believe that someone who was injected was harmed. Walgreens is investigating what went wrong, reviewing its processes and working to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

“We continue to strengthen our operating procedures and are committed to not happening again,” Loverher said.
