Coogler’s Proximity Media has just signed an all-exclusive five-year television deal with Disney, which will allow Coogler to develop new television series for Disney + and other TV divisions of the company. And the agreement already has a project that people will be buzzing about: a Wakanda The TV series is on its way to Disney +.
Disney today announced the deal, revealing that the company has entered into an all-exclusive five-year television deal with writer-director-producer Ryan Coogler’s Proximity Media and principals. Zinzi Coogler, Sev Ohanian, Ludwig Göransson, Archie Davis, en Peter Nicks. Coogler wrote and directed the big Disney / Marvel hit Black panther, and was set to direct the sequel as well. In addition, Coogler and Proximity are developing a Black panther spin-off TV series for Disney + set in the Kingdom of Wakanda. There are not many more details for the show, but it’s probably enough to get a lot of people excited.
Commenting on the agreement, Bob Iger, executive chairman of The Walt Disney Company, said: “Ryan Coogler is a single narrator who has made his vision and variety one of the most notable filmmakers of his generation. With Black panther, Ryan brought to life a groundbreaking story and iconic characters in a real, meaningful and memorable way, creating a watershed cultural moment. We are excited to strengthen our relationship and look forward to telling more great stories with Ryan and his team. ”
Coogler added: “It’s an honor to work with The Walt Disney Company. It was a dream to work with them on Black Panther. As avid television consumers, we could not be happier to start our television business with Bob Iger, Dana Walden and all the amazing studios under the Disney umbrella. We look forward to learning, growing and building a relationship with audiences around the world via Disney platforms. We are especially excited that we will be taking our first leap with Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso and their partners at Marvel Studios, where we will be working closely with them on certain MCU shows for Disney +. We are already working on some projects that we can not wait to share. ”
As you can see in the quote above, Coogler suggests working plural Marvel Cinematic Universe shows, not just the Wakanda series. The agreement also enables Proximity to develop television for other divisions of the company. This is all very good news – my only hope is that Coogler will also work on projects outside the Disney / Marvel stratosphere. This deal seems to consist entirely of TV projects, so if Coogler wants to make a non-Disney movie, it does not have to be a problem. Meantime, Black Panther 2 is currently scheduled to arrive 8 July 2022.
