Wade Davis returns to Kansas City Royals on a small league contract

KANSAS CITY, Mo. The enlightened Wade Davis returns to the Royals, the team he helped to reach the 2015 World Series title.

The Royals and Davis agreed on a minor league contract on Wednesday, and the 35-year-old right-hander will go to practice after the spring to earn a place in the major leagues.

Davis is a three-time All-Star who has played 47 times for the Royals from 2013 to 2016. Kansas City acquired him from Tampa Bay in December 2012, relieved him full-time in 2013, and traded him to the Chicago Cubs for the 2016 season. He hit the final round of the 2015 World Series against the New York Mets and threw a said third strike alongside Wilmer Flores.

He spent one season in Chicago and completed a $ 12.6 million four-year contract with three options worth $ 35.1 million in salary. He then signed a $ 52 million three-year contract with the Colorado Rockies.

Davis had 43 National League saves in 2018 and 15 in 2019, and then only five times with two saves during the pandemic shortened season, when his ERA shot up to 20.77. The Rockies released him in September.

He scored 139 saves in 12 major league seasons, 63-52 with a 3.81 ERA. He is 4-0 with eight saves over 30 games in the post-season game.
