VW Group increases sales of electric cars by more than 200%

The Volkswagen Group increased sales of electric cars by more than 200% in 2020.

VW Group’s EV sales

2020 was a turning point in the electrification effort of the Volkswagen Group, with sales of electric vehicles increasing by 214%, dwarfing hybrid hybrid sales.

VW sold 231,600 electric vehicles in 2020.

Dr Christian Dahlheim, head of Volkswagen Group sales, said:

The COVID-19 pandemic made 2020 an extremely challenging year. The Volkswagen Group performed well in this area and strengthened its market position. We are particularly pleased that, despite the pandemic, we have stepped on the ground in our e-offensive and have therefore taken a major step forward in implementing our Together 2025+ strategy. We will maintain the momentum this year and add many more attractive electric models.

Here are the top-selling VW electric vehicles in 2020:

Volkswagen ID.3: 56,500 units
Audi e-tron: 47,300 units
Volkswagen e-Golf: 41,300 units
Volkswagen email: 22,200 units
Porsche Taycan: 20,000 units

We have just reported that in 2020 Audi sold almost 50,000 e-tron electric sports utility vehicles and Porsche sold more than 20,000 Taycan electric cars in the first year of production.

The results were very good, but the VW ID.3 is the best contributing contribution to the group’s results in 2020.

The e-Golf also had a good year, its last, as VW shifts production capacity to ID.

VW Group’s EV effort in 2021

As Dahlheim said, it sets Volkswagen’s momentum in electric vehicles for 2021.

The Porsche Taycan and Audi e-tron will push it together, but vehicles like the ID.3 will have to push it much higher.

VW is expected to increase production and deliveries in 2021, and the ID.4 will be added worldwide.

Several other brands owned by Volkswagen are also adding MEB-based electric vehicles in 2021, which could cause a similar three-digit growth rate in EV sales for the brand.

Electrek’s Take

Tesla still dominates in terms of volume, but 231,600 EVs are still a good result that strengthens VW as the old-fashioned carmaker that is the most serious about switching to electric vehicles.

My confidence in them has been strong for years, and it stems from their early attempt to ensure battery delivery. This is the best way to see if a car manufacturer wants to achieve the volume production of electric vehicles.

VW has made big strides up front, with offering deals featuring all the major cell suppliers and investments in new production from startups like Northvolt and QuantumScape.

These moves will enable them to grow their EVs significantly over the next few years.
