VW CEO Herbert Diess joins Twitter, troll Elon Musk

“Hello @ Twitter! I’m here to make an impact on @VWGroup, especially on political issues,” Diess tweeted on Wednesday. “And of course to get some of your market share, @elonmusk – after all, our ID.3 and e-Tron won the first markets in Europe. We look forward to productive discussions.”

Volkswagen is the largest carmaker in the world, with global sales of 9.3 million vehicles by 2020 – only 2.5% of sales were electric vehicles.

Although Volkswagen is much larger through sales, Tesla’s market value is about eight times larger.

Diess joined Twitter in December, but sent out his first tweet on Wednesday. In less than 24 hours, the tweet picked up 4,400 likes and he already had 12,000 followers. That’s still a fraction of Musk’s 42.6 million fans, but not bad for a first day.

Musk has so far not responded publicly to Diess’ tweet.

When Diess enters the Twitter verses, he can learn a bit about Musk’s mistakes on the platform. A handful of Musk’s roughly 13,000 tweets got him into real trouble – including actions by the Securities and Exchange Commission that stripped him of his title as chairman of Tesla, and a defamation suit he won.

The CEO of Tesla certainly likes to troll other car manufacturers, but he has actually tweeted nice things about Diess and VW in the past.

Volkswagen and Audi start challenging Tesla

When someone tweeted a story about Diess and Volkswagen to Musk in September 2019, he replied: ‘Herbert Diess does more than any major carmaker to go electric. The best of the world must come first. For what it’s worth, he has my support. ‘

And last October, in another tweet about Diess, Musk wrote: “Diess is doing his best to move in the right direction, but he’s in a difficult position with so many constituencies to please. No way to make everyone happy to make. “
